How It Works: The Tooth Extraction Process
Numbing and Prep
Before we begin the extraction, we'll make sure you're comfortable by using a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. We'll also prep the area by cleaning and disinfecting it to reduce the risk of infection.
Basic Tooth Extractions
For basic extractions, we'll use a special tool to gently loosen the tooth from the surrounding gum tissue. Once the tooth is loose, we'll use forceps to remove it from the socket. This process typically takes just a few minutes.
Surgical Tooth Extractions
For more complex extractions, such as those involving impacted teeth or teeth that have broken off at the gum line, we may need to perform a surgical extraction. During this process, we'll make a small incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth. Once we've removed the tooth, we'll stitch the gum tissue back together to promote healing.
Healing and Recovery
After the extraction, we'll provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth as it heals. We may recommend pain medication or antibiotics to help manage any discomfort or prevent infection. We'll also schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure everything is healing as it should.
Types Of Tooth Extractions
Basic Tooth Extractions
As we mentioned earlier, basic tooth extractions are used to remove a tooth that is decayed, damaged, or otherwise beyond repair.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that typically erupt in the late teens or early twenties. In many cases, these teeth can cause problems if they become impacted or if there is not enough room in the mouth for them to fully emerge. Wisdom teeth extraction is a common procedure that can prevent overcrowding, infections, and other issues.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth Extractions
When wisdom teeth are impacted, it means they are stuck in the bone or gums and cannot fully emerge. This can cause pain, swelling, and infection. In some cases, impacted wisdom teeth may also cause damage to surrounding teeth or lead to the formation of cysts or tumors. Extraction of impacted wisdom teeth is usually recommended to prevent these complications.
